How Google Places Helps Local Businesses Grow

The Importance of Getting Your Local Business Listed & Optimized with Google Places

Industry studies show that roughly 70% of consumers using the Internet to research and/or purchase a product or service begin with Google search.  Often times local business owners ask how they can get found more often for their products and services in their local market, and after doing some quick research, we find that they have not even claimed their Google Places.  So we decided to dedicate this blog to helping local business owners understand the importance of Google Places when it comes to search.

It’s important to know that as smart as everyone believes Google is, Google is only as smart as the information provided.  This is important to remember as claiming your Google Places is the first place to start.  If you have not claimed your Google Places page, at best, Google has generic information about your business that might not even be accurate.  For instance, if you are a landscape designer specializing in high end landscape design, lawn care might not even be part of your offering.  If Google Places has lawn care listed for your business, you are not only being found for the wrong searches, but your time is being tied up with nonqualified customers whom you cannot help.  If you are truly interested in improving your search rankings, the first thing you should do is claim your Google Places and optimize it to make sure all information is accurate and updated.

Some of our clients ask what optimizing your Google Places means?  There are many things you can do to improve your Google Places in order to help your local business with local search results.  The first is to make sure everything is accurate – name, address, telephone number, website, and services offered (categories).  Next upload images and videos if available.  Today Google allows you to upload 10 images and 5 videos.  These become important as Google sees these as evidence of your work.  Finally, there is nothing more powerful than word of mouth through client reviews (testimonials).  You can easily gain testimonials from clients by merely emailing the link to your Google Places to clients who do not mind taking 60 seconds to click and type a few nice things about your business.

While these are helpful ways to get started with Google, there are many other ways we will be discussing in future blogs.  To get started with improving your local search results with Google, go to places.google.com and claim your page today.  Social180 helps local business owners with this process, so please feel free to contact us if we can do so at 469-420-0180.
