Local Marketing with Social Media Part 1

Social media is becoming more and more important for local businesses to market to a local audience, so we decided to share this series of articles on ways we’ve seen social media help with local marketing. Before we get started, it’s important to note that this series of articles is not all-encompassing. There are new innovative ways that social media is helping connect local businesses with local consumers on a daily basis. These are merely a few ideas of ways that you can use social media with your local marketing efforts to reach local people.

How Social Media Allows Your Family and Friends to Help You Promote Your Business

Let’s start with a very simple to understand theory. If most people can stay in contact with 10 friends and 10 of their closest family members, by letting your 10 friends and 10 family members know of your business, you’ve automatically created a potential audience of a few hundred people. The challenge here is having each of your 10 friends and 10 family members get the word out to their 10 friends and 10 family members.  That is where social media comes in.

Although we all know friends and family are the ones who want us to succeed the most as small business owners, it’s probably not top-of-mind for them to think about going out and promoting your business.  Even if they were willing to go out and promote it, most people are limited in time to devote to do so.  With social media pages for your business on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and other communities, you’re able to connect and share updates of your company that keep you at top-of-mind with those friends and family members.  In fact, you can even reach a much broader audience when your friends and family share your as well.

So in simple terms, social media is the new “word of mouth” local marketing allowing your friends and family to help you support and grow your business.  In future social media blogs we’ll share ideas on sponsored posts and updates on your company and how those sponsors can reach additional friends and family members.
